Professor William McIntosh started in the Department of Ortorhinolarungology at the Johannesburg Hospital and University of Witwatersrand in 1969, 36 years ago. He became head of the division in 1984 and is to date the first full professor of Otorhinolaryngology at the University although there were many eminent Otolaryngologists as department heads from the beginning of the 20th century. During this time, 4 South African and 3 major international department head professors were trained and over 60% of all South African ENT surgeons were training here, most of whom are still in South Africa today.
