Wood is also used to make tools, packaging, pallets, paper, houses, boats, cabinets, flooring, and a host of other items. Freshly cut wood will house rings to denote the age of the wood. This product may also contain knots which are regarded as imperfections in the wood. Knots reduce the strength of the wood and increase the tendency for splitting along the wood grain. However, knots in the wood are also used for artistic and visual effect.
 
Unfortunately, man is reducing the 434 billion cubic meters of forest at an alarming rate, thus endangering our future wood and wood products.
