Wood and Wood Products

Wood has been used by man for thousands of years. Humans use wood to built things, or as fuel for a fire.

This porous and fibrous structural tissue can be soft or hard. This product is only available from trees. The primary function of wood is to convey water and nutrients to the leaves. Different kinds of trees give different kinds of wood. Some people choose wood from a redwood or heartwood tree when making household items. This is because of the distinct darker colour of this kind of wood. However other types of ring-porous wood species like ash, black locust, catalpa, chestnut, elm, hickory, and mulberry are also used. This is while some manufacturers use wooden chips to make a weaker form of chipboard.

The better known furniture manufactures will use only the best quality oak wood to make some to the heavier and harder wooden products. Wood is also used to make tools, packaging, pallets, paper, houses, boats, cabinets, flooring, and a host of other items. Freshly cut wood will house rings to denote the age of the wood. This product may also contain knots which are regarded as imperfections in the wood. Knots reduce the strength of the wood and increase the tendency for splitting along the wood grain. However, knots in the wood are also used for artistic and visual effect.

Unfortunately, man is reducing the 434 billion cubic meters of forest at an alarming rate, thus endangering our future wood and wood products.
