Transmission Lines Overhead

Transmission lines transfer electricity from a power station to electrical substations in demand centres. When transmission lines are interconnected with each other, they become transmission networks. Thus the combined lines are known as the power grid. Overhead conductors are a commodity supplied by several companies worldwide.

A transmission substation decreases the voltage of incoming electricity, allowing it to connect from long distance high voltage transmission to local lower voltage distribution. It also reroutes power to other transmission lines that serve local markets. The increase in voltage is achieved in AC circuits by using a step-up transformer. Transmission structure installation is done once the foundation is cured. Steel poles are often assembled on or near the foundation. Cranes and bucket trucks are used to lift the poles and set them into position on the foundations. Generally, it takes one to three days to assemble and erect each new structure. After installation, the structure is grounded. The wire-stringing operation requires equipment at each end of the section being strung. Once the wire is strung, the stringing blocks are removed and the wire clipped into its final hardware attachment. Helicopters may be used during wire stringing operations.

An overhead line typically has a wider easement footprint compared to an underground.
