Soil testing

The analysis of a soil sample to determine nutrients and other characteristics such as acidity is called soil testing. It is widely done in agriculture to determine whether the kinds of nutrients needed to grow a specific plant are available or not. Soil testing may also be used to facilitate fertilizer composition and dosage selection for land employed in both agricultural and horticultural industries. This also helps to determine the fertileness of the soil.

Plants have different soil preferences, some may prefer humid soil and some may not thus soil testing is important before planting. Soil components change with time and nutrients vary with the depth of the soil, these may affect the results of the tests. When performing a soil test, a good soil sampling will give beneficial results. Things that influence the quality of a sample are the tools used, area sampled and information used. Tools for sampling should be stainless steel and or chrome plated. There are a number of commercial laboratories that offer a variety of soil tests, these usually check for plants in about three categories which are major nutrients, secondary nutrients and minor nutrients. One may find Do-it-yourself kit for soil testing in garden stores. Both testing methods are useful but the laboratory tests are more accurate.

There can be considerable seasonal influence on soil test values and every effort to maintain consistency within season when taking soil tests should be made. To find more about soil testing, browse our Yellow Pages listings.
