Silos

A silo is described as a structure for storing various kinds of bulk materials. Generally the silo is used to store grain or fermented feed. This kind of seed is commonly known as silage. These structures can also store coal, cement, carbon black, woodchips and other such material.

There are three particular types of silos that are most commonly used today. These are the tower silos, the bunker silos, and the bag silos. One of the more public uses of a silo is the upright cement silo used to assist in large construction projects. These silos are easier to transport and can be set up on site.

The tower silo, which was invented by Franklin Hiram King, is generally offloaded from the top of the pile. This was originally done using a silage fork. In modern times the unloading can take place using mechanical un-loaders, however these bottom silo un-loaders are difficult of repair. The advantage of using tower silos is that the silage packs well because of its own weight. However this is not always the case for the storage of material like chopped wood.

The smaller stave silos can be expanded if there is a need for it. This is done by adding more loops upwards to strengthen the lower staves. There are also concrete stave silos which are constructed from precast concrete blocks. These blocks have ridged grooves along each edge that lock them together. This construction method ensures a high strength shell.

With the advent of modern technology, the term information silo is now also in use as a management system that does not interact with other related information systems.
