Rope Access

Rope access is best defined as a set of techniques where ropes and specialized hardware are used as the primary means of providing access and support to workers. These techniques were developed from techniques used in rock climbing and caving which allow workers to access difficult to reach spaces without the use of scaffolding, cradles or aerial platforms.

Generally a two- rope system is used, the working rope directly supports the worker and the safety rope provides back-up fall protection. In this profession various custom made techniques can be worked out to suit a particular job or working environment. Types of jobs and environments may vary from working in confined spaces to working on massive high rise building structures either window washing or installing complicated steel structures or frames. Custom rope-access solutions can be designed to fit various applications quickly and inexpensively.

Modern rope-access systems are very safe, versatile, economical and efficient with an almost zero percent in non-fatal accident record and a zero percent fatal incidence record in South-Africa. Major users of rope access techniques are civil, structural and geo-technical engineers, operations and maintenance workers, construction workers, painters, high rise window cleaners, motion picture and theatrical personnel and tower antenna installers.

There are independently-certified rope access technicians who can custom design systems that suit any of the above mentioned professions. In the Yellow Pages you can find addresses and contact details of industrial cleaners, rope manufactures, and qualified rope-access technicians.
