Radiobroadcasting Stations

Radio plays an important role in forming as well as reflecting South African culture, identity, community and public opinion.  Radio broadcasting is a one-way wireless transmission over radio waves that is intended to reach a wide audience. Radio stations can be linked in radio networks to broadcast a general radio format, in simulcast, broadcast syndication or even both. There are numerous methods used for broadcasting electronic media such as telephone broadcasting, radio broadcasting, television broadcasting, cable radio and satellite broadcasting to name a few. The signal types can be analog or digital audio.
 
There are many different ways of providing financial support for continuous broadcasting. Some examples are commercial broadcasting, public broadcasting and grants from business entities and generous foundations. Broadcasting by radio takes on several different forms. They include AM and FM stations and there are many subtitles such as non-commercial, commercial, community, student-run campus radio to name a few. AM refers to Amplitude Modulation and is your earliest broadcasting station. AM is the procedure of radio broadcasting using amplitude modulation. AM radio technology is a lot simpler than FM radio. An AM receiver detects changes in the radio waves at a specific frequency; it then amplifies the changes in the signal voltage to drive a loudspeaker or even earphones. FM means frequency modulation and occurs on airwaves. This is used to provide high-reliability sound over broadcasting radio.
 
The broadcasting industry in South Africa can be divided into three categories. These are your public service radio stations that are owned by the state (SABC), community radio stations that are run by for example universities and commercial radio stations such as Metro FM. To become a radio broadcaster you only need your matric certification.
