Limestone Quarries

A limestone quarry is a site where a sedimentary rock composed of calcium carbonate is extracted from the earth in large blocks or sheets. Lime stone is made up of different crystal forms of calcium carbonate which is made up of the remains of marine animals.

South Africa is fortunate to have natural significant reserves of limestone. The limestone quarries have valuable resources which are used in the production of many products. This means this is good opportunity for employment creation. Quarries that are no longer of use can be turned into an entertainment area, where people can do ‘rock climbing’. On the other hand, these quarries are large and visible. If not managed properly they can disfigure the local environment and cause pollution which is hazardous to the environment.

A limestone is a durable and heavy rock. It is mainly used in the construction industry as a building stone or in the manufacturing of ready mixed concrete. It can be used as an aggregate (crushed rock). It is also a common material for facades, sculptures, and ornamental paving. Limestone can be used as a raw material in some industrial processes such as in iron and steel production, fertilizer production, sugar and paper manufacturing. It is also used in the production of industrial lime that is used for water purification, waste treatment and soil stabilisation.

Limestone quarries are useful to geologists for their experiments and studies.
