Plastic is an extremely flexible material that has revolutionized manufacturing processes in numerous industries. It is used for a great variety of applications, because of the many advantages it confers. Plastic is durable, lightweight, and impact-resistant and can be easily shaped into any form. We are surrounded by plastic products or all sorts of devices using plastic parts and components. Laptops, computers, cellular phones, cars are just a few examples of devices which use plastic in their manufacture.

Depending on the type of products to be manufactured, different plastic manufacturing processes are employed. There are three types of processes used for plastic manufacturing, according to the product requirements: injection molding, plastic extrusion molding and thermoforming.

Injection molding is the most common type of plastic manufacturing process, creating many practical plastic products. By means of thermoplastics, injection molding presses plastic pellets into various molds until the plastic cools ad hardens into the appropriate shape. When the products is cool it is scraped off the mold, and the excess plastic gets recycled. Sometimes, injection molding can leave a small residual line from where the mold parts join. Products manufactured through injection molding include all sorts of plastic containers, toys, tubing and many others.

By means of plastic extrusion molding, the plastic is melted and shaped over a mold, not inside the mold like with injection molding. The plastic is melted over a particular mold, cooled either by spinning or by cold air blast, then the mold is pulled out through the mold cavity - a small hole in the product. This plastic manufacturing process is more appropriate for products used intensely, such as auto bumpers and hoses, tool cases, surf boards, tanks or other plastic products that require higher impact resistance.

Thermoforming is a less intense plastic manufacturing process. Thermoforming heats a large heat of plastic until it becomes pliable, then the plastic is tugged, pulled and lifted into a shape in a process similar to clay modeling. Plastics products are the basic products of our lifestyle.
