Nurses - Private Practitioners (Mem. of SA Nursing Council)

Nursing is a healthcare profession studied and practised by many with the aim of maintaining or recovering optimal health and quality of life in communities. Nurses usually practice according to physicians' orders. However, they are allowed to practice independently in a number of settings depending on their training level. Those with advanced credentials are able to operate independently or collaborate with physicians and therapists.

Nursing is not only practised in hospitals, but in crèches, clinics, and schools as well as homes of their patients. Within the above mentioned places, a number of nursing activities are practised. These include immunisation, diagnoses and treating of various diseases. Nursing is a vital profession as it helps improve the quality of life. Health is a broad term referring to one's wellbeing, not just physical but mentally and emotional as well. For people with stroke and those suffering from dementia and other related diseases, frail care is available all around South Africa. In frail care centres and old aged homes nurses provide the elderly with the help they need, 24 hours. Bathing of patients, dressing of wounds and administering of medication are some of the duties of nurses.

South African nursing council provides necessary information to all those that wish to study nursing. Retired nursing personnel are given a chance by the SANC to re-register, as this will enable them to work part time or assist when emergencies arise.
