Nonwoven fabrics

Nonwoven fabrics are fabrics bonded together by entangling fibres in three ways either mechanically, thermally or chemically. Nonwoven fabrics are neither woven nor knitted and thus the fibres used to make fabrics do not need to be converted into yarn. Some nonwoven fabrics are made of molten plastic or plastic film.

Nonwoven fabrics can be single use (disposable) products, life limited or durable fabrics depending upon the need of end use. Nonwoven materials lack strength the fabrics are therefore reinforced by a backing.
Nonwoven fabrics have a wide variety of properties. These include absorbency, liquid repellence, stretching and softness, cushioning and filtering. Nonwoven fabrics may also be used as a bacterial barrier as they provide the sterility function. Not all the mentioned properties are present in every nonwoven fabric, a fabric may have one or a couple of the mentioned properties. The above mentioned properties often found in nonwoven fabrics are combined to create fabrics suitable for use under certain specifics for various reasons. One being that of establishing a balance between product usage, life span and cost.

Nonwoven fabrics are widely used in a number of applications. They are highly sought in the agricultural industry for coverings, seed strips in automotive industry for upholstery and carpeting, in the construction industry for roofing and wall coverings and in various civil engineering applications.
Nonwoven fabrics can mimic the appearance, texture and strength of a woven fabric one needs to take a closer look to ensure they purchase the exact fabric type they want. To find out more about nonwoven fabrics, browse our Yellow Pages listings.
