Our South African towns or districts are managed by municipalities. A municipality is basically the administrative council that manages the proper running of the district or jurisdiction. The municipality could include small rural villages or larger suburbs, but in the cities, there is a metropolitan municipality running the community. The municipality is voted into power by the people who are resident in the area. Municipalities are divided into wards, which are sections of the area that can managed by different ward councillors. Each area in South Africa will be managed by a different ward councillor, who can be contacted at any time to help with municipal commitments. It’s the ward councillors’ responsibility to ensure a number of factors are running smoothly within the municipality. This includes:
  • Parks in the area are kept safe, clean and in an acceptable state
  • Municipal roads are intact and free from potholes
  • Municipal signs are intact
  • Traffic lights are in working order
  • Street lights are in working order
  • Refuse removal is in operation
  • Public bins are emptied and cleaned regularly
  • Traffic congestion is alleviated where possible
There are many more functions offered by the municipality that acts and governs the area on behalf of the government. Basically, a municipality assists the local government in running a specified area so that the load of responsibility is shared. Find out who your local municipality is by doing a search for your area name. If you can’t find your exact jurisdiction, widen your search slightly.
