Motor Vehicle Manufacturers

The motor vehicle manufacturing industry in South Africa is a growing at a rapid pace. This industry accounts for a large number of jobs and makes a significant contribution the GDP of the country. Motor vehicle manufactures include companies which manufacture as well as those that assemble the car parts which make up the finished product.

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) was regarded as the official body representing new vehicle manufacturers. In accordance with transformation policies in this industry the NAAMSA membership base now includes major importers and distributors of new vehicles. The membership also includes local manufacturers and assemblers. NAAMSA is also the body that releases the latest new vehicle sales figures on a monthly basis.

Under the Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP), manufacturers have been beating expectations in the motor vehicle production arena since 1994. Since 2013 the Automotive Production and Development Programme has been put in place so that expansion of local production can take place. Analysts now believe that South African motor vehicle manufacturers will be able to produce 1.2 million vehicles a year by 2020. This comes as brands like BMW, Ford (incorporating Mazda), General Motors, Mercedes Benz, Nissan, Renault, Toyota and Volkswagen; all have production plants in South Africa. Even component manufacturers such as Arvin Exhaust, Bloxwitch, Corning and Senior Flexonics have established production bases in the country.

Motor vehicle manufacturers are mostly located in the Eastern Cape and Gauteng.
