Mines – Diamond

South Africa is blessed with many natural resources and minerals which include precious metals, stones and fuel. We have mines all over the country which supply different products around the world. The world famous Cullinan diamond discovered in one of the diamond mines in South Africa.

The mining industry plays a pivotal role in South Africa and it contributes greatly to our economy. Diamond mines specialise in finding, recovering and processing of diamonds which are used to make cutting tools or to make jewellery. The quality of these stones determines their use. Gem quality stones are used to manufacture jewellery. Diamonds are the hardest mineral known to man and this is why they are used extensively for industrial purposes. In South Africa diamonds were first discovered on the banks of the Orange River. These days diamond mines employ different techniques to mine diamonds. These techniques are specific to the location where these stones are found. Land-based diamond mining is the most common form of mining in our country, where diamond rich land is excavated in search of these precious stones. Mining operations are extremely technical, time consuming and require a lot of labour as well as machinery. Diamonds are also mined out at sea where specialised mining equipment is used to find and recover these minerals.

Diamond mines can be found inland or out at sea and both produce high quality minerals which are used in the production of jewellery and cutting equipment.
