Chrome mines are known for being the suppliers of high quality chrome ore. The ore is broken underground and brought to the surface by a system of conveyor belts. The chrome content in stainless steel gives it a shiny appearance and resistance to corrosion.
Chrome ore extracted indigenously and chrome alloys produced within the country’s boundaries form part of the output from chrome mines. Samancor and Lanxess are some of the mine companies that specialise in the extraction of chrome and ferrochrome products.
Underground mining mainly relies on room-and-pillar mining which makes hoisting shafts a need in underground mining areas. Bushveld chromite is purposely milled to cover concentrate by gravity and elutriation techniques. Chromite is produced as a by-product in some platinum mines.
Several primary chrome mines are specifically maintained to provide chromite feed to the ferrochrome upcoming industries. South Africa’s chrome mines are found along the Eastern BIC in the Steelpoort Valley.
