Medical practitioners-child psychiatry

Medical practitioners are licensed people with the knowledge and full potential of being able to identify, prevent and treat a physical or mental illness, disabilities and disorders. These include psychiatrists, counsellors, psychologists and surgeons.

Psychiatrists deal with mentally challenged individuals and those having behavioral disorders. For child psychiatric assessment, it is regarded as desirable to gather information from different sources (parents, friends and grandparents). Child psychiatrists normally collect collateral information at the child’s school regarding the child’s behavior at school. Child and adolescent psychiatrists assist parents with handling difficult situations they go by evaluating the child's condition and then providing appropriate remedies. To detect intellectual impairment or other problems contributing to the child’s difficulties, psychometric testing is done.

Some children find it difficult to open up about being bullied at school or being raped, because of the fear instilled in them by the perpetrator. When this happens, victims end up getting depressed, having sleepless nights or nightmares, low self-esteem and some become suicidal. With the help of professional medical practitioners like psychologists, counsellors and psychiatrist some are able to overcome their situation. A child born with disabilities benefits from psychotherapy. To find more about medical practitioners-child psychiatry, browse our Yellow Pages listings
