Infertility

Infertility refers to the inability to conceive or carry a pregnancy to term after twelve months of trying to conceive. In many countries infertility refers to a couple that have failed to conceive after twelve months of regular sexual intercourse without the use of any contraception. Many cases of apparent infertility are treatable. Infertility may have a single cause in one of the partners or it could be the result of a combination of factors. There are many different risk factors of infertility including age, smoking, alcohol consumption, eating disorders, overweight, over-exercising and mental stress to only name a few.

Most people will visit their doctor if there is no pregnancy after twelve months of trying. Anyone who is concerned about infertility should go see his or her general practitioner. If you are over the age of 35, the time of trying to conceive is reduced to 6 months. It is very important to go see a specialist or reproductive endocrinologist for a complete fertility work-up and diagnoses. It is also recommended that you go see a specialist if you had more than one miscarriage.

There are many possible causes of infertility. These include premature ovarian failure, ovulation disorders, under or overactive thyroid gland and also some chronic conditions such as cancer. Some medication can also affect the fertility of a woman or man. There are various fertility tests that can be performed in order to determine where the problem is. These tests may take quite a while before you have any answers concerning your fertility.
