Health Management Institutions

In South Africa there are health management institutions that aim to provide support for building a cadre of effective health managers who deliver quality health services through creation of capacity building, networking and communication opportunities. South African Institute of Health Care Managers (SAIHCM) is one of the health management institutions that was formed to provide a professional association for health care managers working in either public or private health care sectors.

Health systems management ensure that departments within a health facility are running perfectly as expected, resources are available and used efficiently they also monitor that departments are working together with the same objective. Institutes like patient centred care are not only about educating patients about healthy behaviour or diagnosis, they also consider patients’ traditions as well as social circumstances and lifestyle. Health care refers to work done in providing primary care, secondary care as well as tertiary care in public health. Clinics, surgeries and hospitals form part of the health management institutions. People visit health centres not only when they are sick but for regular check-ups including HIV/AIDS tests and papanicolaou (Pap smear) tests for women.

There are six aims of institute of medicine for improving the delivery of health care services. Timely (reducing waiting times), equitable (consistent care regardless of patients’ demographics) and efficiency (avoiding wasting time and other resources) are some of the six aims.
