Hammocks

A Hammock is regarded as a sling that is made up of a rope and fabric, and is suspended between two points.

Hammocks are traditionally used for swinging, resting, or sleeping. It usually consists of one or more cloth panels, or a woven network of twine. Hammocks are generally used as a recreational lightweight bed that is ideal for camping trips. This makeshift bed is often seen as symbol of leisure, relaxation, and easy living. Hammocks are also designed for backpacking and may include mosquito netting along with pockets for storage. Most hammocks are similar in length to accommodate for an average adult's height. Hammock stands are also universal in design. They normally feature a spreader bar and a diagonal arm at each end to provide two hanging points.

Hammocks were first discovered by Europeans when they witnessed these beds in the West Indies during the Spanish conquest of the west. This type of singular bed was also used for babies in south India, where a woven 5 meter lightweight Sari was used to make low hanging ceiling mounted hammocks. In the early 20th century, entire villages in Venezuela used hammocks as a protection against scorpions and venomous snakes. This is while in El Salvador, hammocks were used to repel the effects of constant earthquakes.

Hammocks were also employed by sailors sleeping on the gun decks of warships. This was largely because the limited space prevented the installation of permanent bunks.
