Government clinics

A government clinic is a health care facility owned by the government. It is primarily committed to the diagnosis and treatment of outpatients. This facility is owned and funded by the government. The patients either receive medical care free of charge or pay a subsidised amount. The cost is covered by the government through the public funds collected by the ‘tax man’. You will note that health clinics do not usually have patients staying over for a long period; once they are in need of such services they are quickly referred to the hospital.

The government clinics are administered through one of the government departments; Department of Health. The Department of Health is responsible for the public-sector healthcare. It strives to ensure that the government health facilities such as the clinics and hospitals offer the best health care services in order to improve the health of the South African residents thereby increasing the life expectancy as well as manage certain types of diseases and keep the death rate at a minimal level.

The government clinics and hospitals engage the services of well trained doctors, nurses as well as community workers. Most of the government clinics work with pregnant women before they are referred to the hospitals for complex birth situations. They assist the women throughout their journey through assessments and treatments. They also offer family planning services through the issuing of birth control pills, birth control injections and many more.
These medical clinics also engage in activities that assist the community to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
