Gears

Gears are machine parts that have cogs or teeth that interlock with another toothed part to transmit torque. Geared devices can change a number of  things such as the direction, speed and torque of a power source and is therefore a simple way to generate more power and speed or to redirect power of a  machine into another direction.
 
Gears are used to transmit power from one part of a machine to another part.  For example, in a car the gears transmit power from the crankshaft to the driveshaft that in turn transmits torque in an engine that will ultimately power the wheels. Gears come in all different shapes and sizes and a number of gears can also be connected together. Smaller gears are meant for high speed and less power while bigger gears are meant for low speed and more power.
 
 All gears are fitted together in a casing known as a gearbox to create different gear ratios as well as changing direction of rotation. Cars work best at a  medium speed, which is not too fast or too slow. Changing gears allows the engine to keep turning at the same speed range.
 
There are many different gear types available. The most common type used is spur gears also known as low gears. They have straight teeth and are parallel to the axis of the wheel. Spur gears have a very simple design, are easy to maintain and can be used at almost any speed. Another type of gear are Helic gears. They are high-speed gears, with inclined to the axis of the shafts in the form of a helix. These gears operate much more smoothly and quietly than spur gears. Other types of gears are worm gears, face gears, herringbone gears, rack and pinions, sprockets and internal external gears.
 
There are both advantages and disadvantages of using gears. The advantages are that they may transmit great power, they have high efficiency, and they have reliable service as well as a compact design. The disadvantages are that manufacturers need special tools and equipment that is very costly. Noise and vibration can occur when there is an error in cutting the teeth, and for gears to operate properly they need lubricant that has to be applied in the correct way.
