A gearbox is a casing with a set of gears that has a mechanical advantage of transferring energy from one device to another by a torque (a twisting force to an object). It is used to change the speed of a motor. The gearbox in conjunction with the engine is the driving mechanism of the car.

There are many types of gearboxes manufactured throughout the world and all gearboxes work in a similar fashion. Gearboxes are available in a variety of sizes, gear ratios and efficiencies to meet a wide range of requirements. All these factors will affect the performance and cost of the gearbox.

All mechanical based transport has a gearbox. There are three types of gearing in vehicles i.e. manual, automatic and semi – automatic transmission.  There are quite a number of types of gearboxes including mesh, synch mesh, bevel, planetary and hydraulic gear boxes just to mention a few. However there are two standard types of gearboxes for automobiles namely bevel and planetary gearing systems.

A car gearbox that has multiple gears serves as an important function of increasing the torque while slowing the output speed so as to change multiple speeds when driving. The lifespan of a gearbox is determined by the load on the gear teeth and the number of revolutions of the gear wheels.
