E-commerce

E-commerce refers to retail that takes place online. E-commerce has grown together with the internet and is unlikely to slow down. In first world countries where internet access is very accessible as well as where the populations are very knowledgeable about the internet e-commerce is one of the most common methods of transacting. E-commerce is also popular amongst people who are busy and do not have the time to do their shopping at physical stores. Some retailers are exclusively e-commerce brands and do not actually have physical stores, many of them boasting great financial success.

E-commerce is also growing in third world countries although  at a slower rate. There are a few reasons for slower growth in e-commerce in countries like Africa one of them including not having access to the internet. However the increase in smartphones has led to people having better access to e-commerce platforms. Another reason for the slow growth in e-commerce in third world countries is the smaller amounts of disposable income necessary for shopping.

In order for e-commerce to be successful people need to trust the platform that they are buying from owing to the fact that most platforms require an exchange of confidential information including credit or debit card details. There are many ways in which e-commerce platforms are using the internet to market their businesses successfully using social media and other online tools.
