Crates

The term crate is used to describe a large box or container. It is constructed using lumber or plywood in order to protect large and bulky items during transportation.

Although the most preferred medium used to construct crates these days is wood, other materials such as plastic and metal can also be used. Wooden crates are lighter than metal ones, and are easier and faster to make. Wooden crates are much easier to open, when compared to their metal counterparts.

There are many variations of crate designs that can be used. The most common types being closed, opened and framed. Closed crates are completely enclosed in either planks of wood or plywood. Fresh fruits are typically transported in open crates as it provides enough ventilation to prevent it from spoiling. Framed crates are made from long pieces of lumber that are fixed together to form a cube.

All crates are heavy to carry and wooden runners are used to move them from one point to another. The runners help raise the crates from the floor and make it easier for them to be picked up by a forklift. Storage conditions and transportation methods must always be considered when designing a crate. The difference in temperature, pressure and humidity will affect both the contents of the crate and the strength of the fasteners (nails and staples) in the crate.

Cardboard boxes and any other lightweight packaging will not do if you are planning on shipping large and heavy items. To find crates in South Africa, browse our Yellowpages Listings.
