Crankshafts

Crankshafts are the driving shafts of an engine that are driven by one or several cranks to transmit rotary motion using a handle attached to the shaft. It has crank pins that aid the conversion of two motions from reciprocating to rotational motion and vice versa.

A crankshaft is situated between the pistons and drive wheels at the bottom end of the engine and controls the huge forces produced by the explosions in the combustion chamber. Its front end, known as the snout, turns the timing gear to drive the crank shaft and the drive pulley which runs a belt connected to the alternator fan, water pump and steering.

The other end of it is connected to the toothed flywheel and allows the starter motor to rotate the crank shaft. Together with the connecting rods attached to the pistons, the crank shaft is able to change the up and down motion of the pistons to that of a rotating one. It is used in wind mills to create a back and forth movement from a rotary motion through a rod to the pump cylinder. The reciprocating strokes by the crank shaft enable wind mills to turn slowly in low winds and be able to self-regulate the motion in high intense winds.

Crank shafts in vehicles have balancers with drilled oil passages to allow the engine to pass oil to all crank shaft bearings to the connection rod. Power lubricated balancers reduce rotational vibrations of the crank shaft and aid durable noise free and improved performance of the engine.
