Computer cabinets

Computer cabinets are enclosures with fitted, fixed or removable side panels and doors. These cabinets are designed in such a manner that they inhabit a computer and its peripherals. Inside the cabinet are racks where computers and the peripheral devices are mounted. These cabinets come in a variety of sizes so as to accommodate computers of different sizes. They differ in colour and style as well.

Racks are a part of a computer cabinet. However people often use the term rack and computer cabinet interchangeably when referring to a computer cabinet. The rack refers specifically to the frame that provides a means for mounting electronic equipment, while a cabinet is the fitted structure having doors and side panels that encloses the racks and the equipment mounted on the racks.

Inside the computer cabinet often fans are found. These fans are installed so as to improve airflow and facilitate cooling. A well designed computer cabinet provides a significant separation of the cool air supply and hot air from the computer system. Cold air needs to easily flow into computer cabinets, while hot air needs to easily flow out. Blanking panels are used to prevent cool air from moving though a cabinet without cooling the electronics. However on their own blanking panels do not offer maximum efficiency as a result internal air dams may be installed in the computer cabinet.
