Chassis Straightening

Chassis straightening is a technique used in automotive restorations to straighten wrecked vehicle bodies and frames. A straightening bench is used for straightening frames. It is positioned flat on the ground and the car is driven over it. It is then attached to the bench as required using a puller and other equipment for securing the wheel to the bench.

Panelbeaters use different types of chassis straightening equipment and tools when repairing automobiles. Examples include anchor pots, frame machine clamps, pulling posts, frame racks and pullers. Depending on the equipment used, lifting and setting down of a frame or body onto the machine may be required. However, other machines require no lifting but tilting as they have ramps where a vehicle is pulled onto the machine. To securely draw frames or vehicles to the bench, chains and cables are used. A vehicle involved in an accident with damaged parts or dents may be taken to a car dealership. The body is straightened to its original shape, spray painted and restored to its previous deluxe condition. Car dealerships do all sorts of repairs and restorations. Some go as far as doing an entire modification for resale.

Garages and panelbeaters do repairs for obvious problems such as rust removal, painting, wheel alignment and straightening. They also disassemble the vehicle for thorough cleaning and repairing of major parts and other components. To find out more about chassis straightening, browse our Yellow Pages listings.
