Brick facing

Brick facing which is locally also known as brick veneer is simple a facing with a thin brick surface on the front. Facing is the name given to surfacing material. For both indoor or out door applications there are a variety of products produced and the instillation also differs between the two. Designs of facing vary with some looking quite similar to traditional red brick, while some will opt for a more rustic artistic appearance.

Laying out of these bricks differs between both exterior and interior. In interior walls the facing is applied in almost the same manner as tiles are laid out. This type of brick is most popular for decorating walls around fireplaces and for also producing an industrial feel in apartments.

Brick facing instillation on the exterior is very different. Instead of being placed directly on to the wall, anchors called brick ties are connected to the house through joints in the mortar. The bricks are set on their own foundation and are supported by their own weight.

Installation on both interior and exterior is not as easy as it looks especially on the exterior. It's recommended if one is a home owner without any serious contracting experience not to take up this kind of project as a do-it-yourself. Since brick facing structures are separate structures if installed properly it does not improve the structural integrity of the building. It can be subject to water damage thou this can be minimized by providing drainage holes. To find out more about brick facing, browse our Yellow Pages listings.
