Artist Agents

An artist would be looking for an agent to showcase his or her work as soon as the piece of art is completed. While art schools do a great job of teaching art, they spend too little time teaching the basic business skills required to sell your art.

An art agent is someone who has the marketing skills to best represent an artist. The primary job of the agent is to try to find a willing buyer for the piece of art created by the artist. Before this can happen, the agent would probably have a contract worked out with the artist. This contract would state what percentage or fixed amount the agent would take for the service offered. It should also state who owns the copyright to the work being created.

The agent would also try to arrange for a showing of the art, preferably at a gallery. Since it is in the agent’s interest to sell the works of the artist, because of the commission, this relationship between artist and art agent is seen as a win-win agreement. However, one should be careful in how you make your financial arrangements with the agent. It is also best to consult an attorney to look over the contract with the agent to make sure you know what you are getting involved in.

The difficulty for most artists is to find an art agent willing to sell their work. It does not matter how talented an artist may be, the agent would only select an artist work based on the probability that the work will sell.
