Artificial Limbs

With advances in modern technology, losing a limb doesn’t have to be a death sentence. Science and technology has now managed to develop artificial limbs for almost all parts of the body.

One could lose a limb for a number of different reason. You could suffer from a serious injury, a disease like diabetes, a birth defect, which will require amputation. Most people in Africa would need artificial limbs because of the ravages of war and the landmines that are left behind.

An artificial limb is sometimes referred to as prosthesis. This device can replace your missing limb, giving you a fairly normal lifestyle. While living without a body part can be difficult on your daily routine, the artificial limb can help you regain your everyday functions like walking, eating, or dressing. Some artificial limbs will allow you to function just as well as you did before. Since the artificial limb is not your original limb, you would have to get used to walking with this device.

Scientists today are also in the process of developing bionic artificial arms, like the ones you see in the movies. When a limb is cut off, the nerves, muscles, and bone are affected. While the traditional artificial limb looks good and can assist you by providing balance in your life, the new generation of artificial limbs could reconnect the nerves to your brain. This will allow your body to regain full control of all your limbs. Amputees can also take comfort in the fact that artificial limbs are becoming increasingly similar to real limbs.
