Alloys

A mixture of metal and other elements containing one or more of the three phases (a solid solution of the elements, a mixture of metallic phase and an intermetallic compound) forming an impure substance is known as an alloy. Alloys are used where their properties are superior to those of the pure component elements, steel, brass, solder and phosphor bronzes are examples of alloys.

Depending on the atomic arrangements, alloys are normally classified as substitutional or interstitial alloys. Those that consist of a single phase are known as homogeneous, heterogeneous are those with two or more phases then intermetallic are the ones with no distinct boundary between phases. Since steel is one of the most commonly used alloys, when chromium is added it enhances its corrosion resistance and stainless steel is created. Alloys like electrum consist of gold and silver, such alloys occur naturally making it native to earth. Oxygen, sulphur and phosphorus are some of the unwanted impurities that have detrimental effects to alloys. Sometimes alloys are used predominantly with respect to their base metals and this result in having the name of the primary constituent used as of an alloy. Some alloys are made from melting and mixing two or more metals.

Malleable metals like aluminium can be altered by alloying together with the help of cooper. Duralumin and some other alloys are widely used in construction of aircrafts.
