In 1995, the entrepreneurial Broomberg brothers, Ryan and Glen, opened the first R10 Store in Edenvale, Johannesburg, followed by a second store in Parow, Cape Town in March 1996.The Melbro Group, a venerable wholesaling concern with roots dating back to the late 19th century, saw the potential in the fledgling project and got involved from early on, eventually acquiring a 50% stake. Rapid growth followed, with store numbers burgeoning to 40 by the end of 1996. At the time the Rand was relatively strong at R3 to the US dollar, and this meant ample stock could be offered at under the R10 threshold. After the market crisis struck in 1997, the Rand cracked and the R10 cap could no longer hold. By 1999, The R10 Store became The Crazy Store, a sane and unCrazy decision.The same year saw a change of ownership with Melbro acquiring 100% control.The Crazy Store then began a rapid expansion beyond major urban areas today almost half of the stores are in rural and peri-urban areas.In 2004, the 100th Crazy Store ope
