The Avril Elizabeth Home for the Mentally Handicapped is a facility that offers a range of stimulation and therapy services including various support services skilled nursing and physiotherapy the home does not only house and feed their residents but them also encouraged residents to reach their maximum potential Avril Elizabeth is currently home to 151 permanent residents and 14 day care attendees The home was officially opened in 1970 by social worker Sheila Suttner Before opening the Home Sheila worked at the Selwyn Segal Centre which was a home for intellectually disabled people of the Jewish faith The Avril Elizabeth Home for the Mentally Handicapped started as a pilot scheme after Sheila was inundated with desperate pleas from non Jewish parents to admit their children to the centre Their main buildings accommodate children and those with severe disabilities who require 24 7 care
