People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA) is a 27 year old organisation that was started by volunteers who volunteered their time to ensure women could access counselling and safe environment free from abuse. During 2005, telephonic clients for the 5 branches totaled 1395 Approximately,90.3% of the callers were female,8.7% were male. Face to Face clients for 2005 yielded a total of 779 for the 5 branches, of which 93.% were female and 6.3% were male. Our services include: telephonic and individual counselling,shelter referrals for abused women,Legal advice, court preparation and Support, Educational workshops,talks and seminars,community outreach and support to groups wanting to open similar services in the communities,Lobbying and campaigning,Research, Self help economic empowerment projects (catering skills,Sewing etc),Training in counselling skills and train-the-trainer workshops, particularly around violence against women,Information and referrals for abused women, their friends, family and professionals in the
